9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance

Remember – Honor – Serve

September 11, 2009

In April 2009, President Obama signed the Edward M. Kennedy Service America Act which, for the first time, officially recognized September 11th as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. Throughout the country, volunteer events were planned to help people in need, run food drives, spruce up schools and to support and honor veterans and first responders.

Senior Volunteer Services held their First Annual National Day of Service and Remembrance event on September 11th at Lauderdale Memorial Park to honor the victims of 9/11 and those who rose to service in response to the attacks. Approximately 100 people were in attendance to honor veterans and first responders.  R.O.T.C. students from Hallandale High School participated in the event by escorting volunteers while placing American flags on veteran’s graves, in honor of their bravery and sacrifice for our country.
