Senior Volunteer Services Honors Over 900 Senior Volunteers
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – Over 900 senior volunteers were honored by Senior Volunteer Services on April 29, 2009 at the Signature Grand in Davie. Also honored with the 2009 Edith S. Lederberg Wisdom in Action Award was Secretary E. Douglas Beach; appointed by Governor Charlie Crist as the Secretary of the Florida Department of Elder Affairs.
“Volunteering will never go out of style. Volunteerism is an essential building block of every community, and the volunteers themselves reap countless benefits including physical, intellectual and emotional, by lending a hand.” said Secretary Beach.
“There is definitely something unique about these individuals that volunteer unselfishly to give back to the community. Our world is a much better place because of so many men and women making a difference with their time and sharing their experiences with others.” said John Gargotta, President & CEO of Senior Volunteer Services.
Senior Volunteer Services provides support and companionship to the frail elderly and adults with disabilities, tutoring and mentoring children with exceptional or special needs, placing volunteers with nonprofit organizations where their skills and experience enhance the capacity of service to our community.

Special recognition went to four Broward County community partners and the volunteers that provide countless hours of service. These partners are North Fork Elementary School, The Learning Center for Vision Impaired Seniors of Broward County, Joseph Meyerhoff Senior Center and All Purpose Life Skills. These partnerships have made a significant difference in the lives of both children and seniors.
Foster Grandparents Mae Thomas and Aurelia Walker were honored for their outstanding dedication and commitment to the students at North Fork Elementary School. “I was an old lady when I started volunteering 5 years ago, now I am young and vibrant.”, said Grandma Mae Thomas, Foster Grandparent volunteer.
“We know that our grandparents make a huge difference in our community, school and student lives that only could come from one’s heart.” said Tammy Rosario, North Fork Elementary School.
