Senior Volunteers Make a Difference for Themselves and the Community

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA
Senior Companion Program volunteers spent time with Secretary E. Douglas Beach discussing how volunteering has improved their lives and the lives of the people they help. On May 21, 2009, Secretary Beach visited Broward County to meet with Senior Volunteer Services older adult volunteers and the people that they provide a valuable service to.

Secretary E. Douglas Beach was appointed by Governor Charlie Crist on February 13, 2007 as the Secretary of the Florida Department of Elder Affairs. One of the most important goals for the department is to promote and advocate services for the state's elderly population.

Senior Volunteer Services supports the department’s goals through the Senior Companion Program which provides in-home, supportive, individualized services to homebound frail elderly and adults with disabilities. This service helps clients maintain their dignity and independence. Senior Companion Program Director Pamela Carre said “Families in Broward County are struggling to care for their loved ones and the Senior Companion Program helps to keep the frail and elderly independent and in their own homes which helps control the rising cost of health care for the state of Florida.”

Senior Companion volunteer, Eveline McLean has been volunteering for over 5 years. At 80 years of age, McLean travels on the bus for two hours to get to Wilton Manor Adult Day Care, where she volunteers 5 days a week. “I would rather volunteer and help people than to stay home alone. I keep going back because I feel appreciated.” said McLean.

Secretary Beach said “Volunteering will never go out of style. Volunteerism is an essential building block of every community, and the volunteers themselves reap countless benefits including physical, intellectual and emotional, by lending a hand.”

Senior Volunteer Services has over 900 volunteers who are 55 years old and over whom work with people of all ages, including thousands of children and frail adults through collaboration with schools, libraries, hospitals, non profit organizations and public agencies.
